The behaviours of young men with the labels of autism can sometimes be interpreted mistakenly as ‘sexual’ by those around them and lead to restrictive outcomes for the young men themselves. This event will focus on how research can lead to new and more enabling understandings of such behaviours. Tom Andrews, full time teacher of pupils on the autism spectrum and part time PhD student at Sheffield Hallam University will present on his research into identifying and understanding the impact of ‘sexual development’ on the lives of some young men with autism. This will be followed by an open discussion around the issues raised facilitated by Dan Goodley, Professor of Disability Studies and Education at the University of Sheffield.

This event is sponsored by the Economic and Social Research Council for the ESRC Festival of Social Science. It is hosted by The Autism Centre, Sheffield Hallam University in partnership with Talbot Specialist School Innovation Hub and The Sheffield Autistic Society.
